It's the first day of 2020 and I'm sitting at home with a heating pad on my lower back. I hurt it a few days ago at work, so I'll probably be sitting most of the day, going between the heating pad and the ice pack, watching a few college bowl games. Those who know me know that I don't like to just sit around, not accomplishing much. So, needless to say, I'm a little frustrated. Oh well. I hope and pray that I'll be up and ready to go to work tomorrow.
I'm not one to make new year's resolutions. Not that resolutions in and of themselves are bad, but they have to be backed up with real action or, as most people find, their resolutions will quickly fade and be forgotten.
I'm calling 2020 the year of the verb. Verbs are, by definition, action words. Well, actually there are two categories of verbs. Verbs express action or a state of being; something we do or something we are. A resolution is just a stated wish unless we take the next step and put some purposeful action behind it. And if we continue to take action steps we begin to realize that we become what we desired to be; a state of being.
It is not enough to call yourself or myself a Christian unless we are taking action to actually become a Christian, to make it our state of being. 2020 needs to be the year of the verb; the year when we we take the necessary actions to become what God wants us to be, more and more like His Son Jesus Christ. It's putting feet to our faith. Without definitive action our goals will simply remain unfulfilled resolutions.
So today I'm relegated to my chair, going between the heating pad and the ice pack. But I'm already making 2020 the year of the verb, reading God's Word, praying, making plans to be the man God created me to be. How about you? Why not make your 2020 the year of the verb.
