Today is January 5, 2021. It is the day in which the two Senate seats in Georgia will be decided. If the Republicans win, they will continue to hold the majority in the Senate and be able to stand as a check and balance in our government. If the Democrats are successful in winning the seats, Joe Biden and his administration will in all likelihood be able to push their agenda through without much difficulty.
This presidential election has been viscous, visceral, and divisive, and continues to be so. What alarms me more is the anger and fear I have personally witnessed among the body of Christ. It has been the cause of greater division among God's people. Why is this? Have we Christians in America so amalgamated the state with the church?
Let me ask a question. What if your worst political nightmare was God's will for our nation at this time? That question alone may have been enough for some of you to stop reading this. Is God's will thwarted by the rise and fall of certain political parties or nations? What if this nation of ours finds itself quickly going down the path of true socialism and whatever may follow? Again, the question remains; has God's will been thwarted?
In Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21, Jesus' disciples were admiring the temple in Jerusalem, which under the guidance of Herod the Great was still under renovation, but even then was a marvel to see. Listen to the the descriptive words used in Luke 21:5: "Then, as some spoke of the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and donations."
Jesus' reply was quick and surprising, catching the disciples off guard. It was not the reply they had expected. "These things which you see--the days will come in which not one stone shall be left upon another that shall not be thrown down."
What? This was the temple He was referring to. How could this be? This is God's house! We could easily insert our nation for the temple here. What? This is the United States you're referring to. How could this be? This is God's country! As nations that have come and gone before us, many of them saw their demise as they turned their backs on God.
So what am I trying to say here? I think many of us have placed too much faith in our country and our political system and not enough in God. God is sovereign. He lifts some up and takes others down, all for His purposes. Sometimes He allows a nation to wander, even to find itself being taken captive, all with the purpose of drawing His people back to Himself.
According to Jesus Himself in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21, we should expect things to become worse, not better, before Christ's return. Our nation, this world, is sliding toward the Great Tribulation and the predictions laid out through Jesus' words before His return.
So, what are we to do? Make ourselves ready, as a bride readies herself for her groom. Be an "all in" Christian. Be a person of faith, not fear. "And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you are blessed. And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled. But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear" (1 Peter 3:13-15).
